Health awareness; Coeliac (Celiac) disease

coeliac celiac disease awareness and health

Definition; Coeliac disease (or Celiac in other countries) is a common digestive disorder that occurs in the small intestine causing an adverse reaction to Gluten.

Approximately one person in every hundred people in the United Kingdom is affected by coeliac disease.

Coeliac disease is caused by a reaction to gliadin, a gluten protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Exposure to gliadin causes an inflammatory reaction leading to the body’s defence against infection mistakenly attacking healthy tissue. People often think that Coeliac disease is an allergy or an intolerance to gluten, it isn't, In cases of Coeliac the body thinks that substances found inside gluten is a threat to the body and attacks them, which in turn takes effect on the small intestine damaging the surface and affecting the way the body absorbs nutrients.

Coeliac disease can affect both adults and children from infancy onwards eating foods which contains gluten for people with coeliac disease can lead to a range of different symptoms such as;
  • In children not growing at the expected rate
  • bloating and flatulence
  • weight loss
  • feeling tired all the time
  • dihorrea
Symptoms can range from quite mild to severe in Coeliac disease. Symptoms listed above could be connected to other illnesses and exactly what causes your immune system to attack is still not entirely clear however it is thought to be a combination of a persons genetic make up and environmental factors. If you think you have symptoms you should always visit a GP or get advice from your local health specialist.

There is currently no cure for Coeliac disease, but changing your diet to a gluten free one will significantly improve and control symptoms. If you only have a small number of mild symptoms you should still follow a gluten free diet to prevent further future complications. It is very important to follow a healthy and balanced diet in any person and with the vast amount of food that has appeared on the market which is gluten free it is easy now more than ever to do this.

To make things simpler when buying gluten free products Coeliac UK have come up with the cross grain symbol this has and is being promoted worldwide to organisations, as a food label so when you see this symbol you know that the food is gluten free.

  1. Thanks for this! I have recently been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease after 18 months of tests! I also suffer from Crohn's disease and Bile Acid Malabsorbtion so my diet is very restricted - gluten/lactose free and I am on a list of meds. I hate it but there is nothing I can do about it! It is part of why I suffer from my depression.
