A Little Boys Love

Most children at some point there lives have things that they love right from when they are born - some have comforters like blankets or teddies others have dummies or a fiddly bit of cloth they run between their fingers. Then as they get to toddling age their attachments become wider they may have a favourite food, toy, television program, even a favourite place - children between the ages of 18 months and three years usually jump a lot between different their likes and dislikes.

This is Adams story of his love, his love of his little wellies, sounds silly doesn't it how a little person can become so attached to something that is really has no meaning to me or to you, us grown ups are far to worried about the bills, cleaning, shopping, whats for dinner, If only things were that simple for us!

But to that little boy those wellies mean everything to him, go everywhere with him - he can put them on himself, not always the right way round but he can do it they give him a sense of independence almost screaming "I am a big boy" I can see the way he looks at me sometimes whilst shaking his head as he is pushing his feet into them as if to say;

"look mum shoes just don't work for me but wellies are great, I really don't need you mum I can do it all by myself!"

You see these wellies have been in his life since way before Christmas, in fact he took these on holiday with us last year his feet were too small to be wearing them, but he insisted he should, you see Adam has always had his own mind, he knows what he likes and what he doesn't, and those wellies, well I cant see them going anywhere until his feet are practically growing out of the end of them.

If you seen him walking around in his wellies on the warmer days that are finally here, I think you would probably look at me as a mum and think can't you afford to buy that child some shoes.....

But that's just it I have been trying to move him away from wearing his wellies all of the time. I took him too a sports shop and let him pick a pair of trainers that he liked, he choose a beautiful pair of gleaming white Nike trainers. Only when we got home I was distraught to hear horrible words from him when I asked him to put them on - It was

"NO" "I wanna my Wellies"

I did once hide his wellies when we went out - so he had to wear his trainers he wasn't a happy boy, but he did wear them and clearly whilst wearing his trainers he was plotting his revenge, because this is what happened next. A few days after this outing his beautiful Nike Trainer was no where to be seen, I say trainer because one was where the shoes live in the hall and the other trainer was not.

I asked both Liam and Adam if they knew where it was and for a week or so they both denied any knowledge of ever seeing it - you kind of think as a mum maybe they have moved it, or had I put it somewhere and forgotten so I approached Adam again and asked him if he knew where his trainer was?
In that moment he muttered under his breath, I didn't catch what he had said so I asked him again, his answer;

"In Bin" I asked him if he was sure, Liam pipes up "I think I remember Adam Put it in the bin"

his brand new trainer gone, so he definitely got his own back at mummy, now the only pair of footwear he has is his wellies, he is very happy with himself, not like me. At first I was angry, angry because of the cost, I cant afford to keep buying him new shoes because he has decided he doesn't like them, However my anger soon subsided when I sat back and thought about the whole situation. The issue I have with him wearing wellies, well its silly really isn't it because their really is no issue if someone told me not to wear my favourite coat, or shoes would I still wear them of course I would, so why shouldn't I let him wear what he wants.

I guess the moral of the story is even at two years old children have there own minds and when it is harmless like a favourite pair of shoes, a blanket, or silly things like still having a bottle at night it really doesn't matter, as parents just because were told that children should not do something it doesn't actually mean that it is wrong - Lets face it they're not still going to be continuing with their comforts when they are sixteen so while they are happy, let them be happy after all they're really not hurting anyone.

What do your children love? do they have a comfort blanket or dummy or is it something more unusual I would love for you to share your thoughts.

  3. I love that his comfort is his peppa pig wellies. So cute. Love all the fun photos too. Buba has blankie attachment badly but only at home not when we leave the house they don't come with us. And he has never ask to bring them but as soon as he walks in the door he wants them by his side. There are two. Missy Moo hasn't yet but she is only 10 months old. Still waiting to see what she attaches herself to if anything. Thank you so much for linking up to Share With Me. #sharewithme

  5. M loves her daddy's shorts and brings them everywhere with her! It's because Daddy wears them when she goes to sleep at night and she always holds the cords! It's now her comfort item! Quite sweet really! Thanks for linking up to the #binkylinky

  6. Brilliant! At the moment, Potato is very fickle with his love and his affections can switch in the blink of an eye. This can be a real pain when you've gone to great efforts to ensure he has his favourite train with us, only to discover that we actually needed his favourite digger!
